The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum just posted over 700 posters related to flight on their website. The Fly Now! collection dates way back to 1827 and also features more current posters. Hot air balloon, space travel, and airline ads are all included in the collection and it is a must see. I just went through all of them and the artwork is insane. First of all, why can’t all airline ads look as cool as these anymore? No wonder why advertising became so necessary – it was actually pleasing to look at and I can see how influenced one might have become by looking at such creative material. These days, not even the font is tasteful when you’re looking at an airline ad. Show me some ’60s beach bunnies and Chilean surfers camped out on a beach and I’ll fly LAN to Chile any day. (Side note: LAN is the best airline EVER.) And how about these hot air balloon ads with trapeze artists? Amazing. Oh, and how about that family that created a hoax by having their 6-year-old son hide at home while they pretended he disappeared in a giant helium balloon? DISGUSTING. And for what?! A reality show?! Those people do not deserve to be parents. Sorry, the hot air balloon poster got me on a roll.
